    Transportation Centers

This week we are expanding our Transportation Theme printables.

To get you started, I've found some fabulous ideas that can be use in independent centers, plus a few free printables.

    Pretend Play
A transportation unit really is just begging for some pretend fun.  So, go through your house to collect some toy cars, trains, boats and planes.  Just let your kiddo have fun pretending.  If you have a car rug, make sure you pull it out too!  Of course, train sets are always a plus.

    Fine Motor
This is a great activity for not only working on fine motor skills, but shapes as well.  Print the shapes on cardstock, laminate and cut out for your kiddo.  Then let them match the shapes for the different vehicle mats.

    Stamping
We love doing stamping strips in our house.  Don’t forget to do this activity you will need uppercase or lowercase stamps and an ink pad.

    Tots in Action-Transportation

Here are some pictures of our week in action!  We hope that they help you as you plan your week ahead.

    Transportation Craft

I know our week has been off a little, but I wanted to share a craft.  This is a great simple craft that is all over the web.  Plus, you can do in two different ways.

Lil’man took some play-dough and flatten it out.  Then he used his toy cars to create tracks in play-dough.

This activity is also fun to do with paint, instead of play-dough.

That’s it.  Quick set up, activity for all ages and keeps them entertained for a good 30 minutes.

    Ways We Get Around

This unit has been expanded. So, make sure and get all the printables here.

Here is what we’ve been doing this week. Let us know what you think.  We hope by providing these materials to you free of charge, it will make your life easier!

Lesson Plan: The lesson plan includes all the lessons for the week, as well as optional ideas. Items following the lesson plan are just the printables or links to websites we used to teach these plans.  (Please note: On top of our lesson plan we are reading books daily that relate to our theme.)

Memory Verse: This memory card is for daily use during our calendar time.  You can learn more about calendar time at 1+1+1=1 or Homeschool Creations.  Our weekly devotional is an object lesson that will help your child apply the meaning of the verse to them.

    Day 1:
Transportation Word Puzzles- A New Activity! This activity was inspired by Word World. These puzzles will help your child begin to recognize that when letters are combined they form words

Train Measure- This activity will help your child gain experience in measurement by using a non-standard measuring tool. In this activity your child will use a number “ruler” to measure trains.

Transportation Sort- Use this activity to discuss some of the different modes of transportation with your kiddo.

    Day 2:
Highway ABC Cards- This activity is from Making Learning Fun.  Use it to practice letter formation, by having your child drive over the letters with a toy car.

Shape Vehicles- Your child will use visualization and spatial reasoning to begin to notice characteristics and properties of geometric shapes.

Cars & Ramps- Help your child investigate ramps to find out which ramp makes the cars go the fastest and the slowest.

    Day 3:
Transportation Beginning Sound Clip Cards- Helps your child to focus in on the beginning letter sounds he/she hears and then to identify which letter makes that sounds.

Dice Game: Flying High- This activity will help your child begin to read and count whole numbers 1-3.

Paper Airplanes- Create different types of paper airplanes to find the one that flies the highest, the fastest and the furthest.

    Crooked Roads Made Straight

The verse you will be working with your child on this week is Luke 3:5.

    image

“The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. ”

    Materials:

    • A toy car
    • A crooked “road” drawn on a sheet of construction paper
    • A straight “road” drawn on a sheet of construction paper

    Directions:

    • Say the verse above with your tot.  We suggest that you print the verse off and use it every morning with your calendar time.  If you don’t do calendar time still say the verse each morning with your tot before you begin tot school.
    • Follow the cues given in this devotional.

Talk with your child about the following:
We’ve been talking about all of the ways that we get around this week.  We’ve learned a little bit about boats, planes, trains, and cars.  Normally when we go places we get there by taking our car, don’t we?  We’re going to use a little toy car to talk about our memory verse today.

I have here two roads that I drew on construction paper for you.  I am going to give you a toy car and I want you to drive on the roads for me.  First I want to give you this curvy road that I drew.  I want you to keep the car on the road for me and get all the way from the bottom of the paper to the top of it, but you have to stay on the road, OK?  Good job!  It took a little bit of time to get from the bottom to the top on the curvy road, didn’t it?

Now let’s try this one.  It’s straight.  I want you to take your car and stay on the road from bottom to top.  Ok, go!  Good job!  It was a little easier to stay on the straight road, wasn’t it?  There weren’t any curves, just one way to go.

Our verse today talks about crooked roads, which are really curvy roads, and straight roads.  In the verse Jesus tells us he will make all the crooked roads in front of us straight.  Now that doesn’t mean that He will really come down and change the road we are driving on!  What it means is that when something we hear is hard to understand, God will make it clearer to us.  All we have to do is ask Him to help us.  God wants to help us, and He wants us to grow closer to Him.  Let’s pray and ask God to help us understand all the things he tells us.

Dear Father, thank you so much for helping us see things better.  Sometimes the things we hear in your word are hard to understand, but we know that you will help us if we ask you.  Be with us as we study and learn your word together, and help us to understand all that you tell us in it.  In your name we pray, Amen.

    Movie Night-Thomas the Tank Engine

Our plan for a Movie Night has been disrupted twice now.  Things happen I suppose.

    image

That being said, here are some fun movie ideas for you and your family.   Our family will hopefully get around to watching Thomas: Hero of the Rails sometime this week.  Here some other movie ideas for your own family movie night…

For some snack ideas you can check these out:

    image

I found this image for all of you out there with a sweet tooth.  You’ll need:
    - 2 Twinkies
    - 1 Marshmallow
    -Chocolate covered wafer cookies
    - 4 Oreos
    -Frosting or Whipped Cream

You can assemble it using the image above as a guide.  I must confess it looks a little too sweet for my tastes!

For those of you who want a saltier snack, try the Cheese and Cracker Train.  If you make this, post some pics, because the world wide web doesn’t have any that I could find!

Hope your family night goes smoothly!
