Rain Center Ideas

This week we are expanding our “Rain” Theme printables.

Below you will find some activities that your kiddo should be able to do independently.

Writing

Found more great free resources from Busy Bee Kids Printables! They have several Spring mazes with varying levels of difficulty.  Plus, they have several choices on rainy dot-to-dots. For our writing activities, my son use our Crayola Dry Erase Activity Center, which allows these pages to be used over and over again without having to laminate them. If you don’t have a Crayola Dry Erase Activity Center, then I would suggest laminating them.

Pretend Play

Give your kiddo a white sheet or towel and let them pretend to be a cloud. Provide some music and get the little cloud to dance.

Art

Create a rainbow collage.  Provide your kiddos with scraps of tissue or construction paper in all the colors of the rainbow. Let them glue the pieces to the rainbow template from Making Learning Fun. To make it more exciting, provide you kiddo with Fruit Loops, Skittles or M&Ms.  Of course, Do-a-Dot Paints would also work.  Do whatever you think your kiddos would enjoy best.   I know my son will be all about the food items!  Don’t forget to add some cotton balls or marshmallows for clouds.

Snow & Ice Center Ideas

So, I’m a lot late getting this post up today.  The boy had his well check and had to get 4 shots today!  Poor guy.  He did pretty good for the first two, but wasn’t really thrilled with having to get two more.  Fortunately, he won’t have to get any more for 7 years!  He was a trooper and shook off the experience quickly.  This mama sure doesn’t like to deal with the whole shot thing.  I was so relieved that my husband was in there to hold my hand, I mean the boy’s hand.

Alright, I guess you’d might like some center ideas this week, huh? Well, we are expanding our Snow & Ice Theme printables, so I tracked down some ideas that I hope you’ll enjoy. Remember to go over how to do the activity with your kiddo before allowing them to do it independently.

Felt

For our Snow & Ice week, I found some felt matching activity using shapes from Making Learning Fun. I’ll you’ll need is some white or blue felt.  Then cut out several of the shapes on page 1. Using the felt shapes to create the snowflakes on the cards provided.

Felt or Flannel boards are a fun way to retell stories or even for matching activities.  If you don’t have one, they are easy to make.  I found several tutorials on the web, my favorite from Itty Bitty Love. I love that it is small for kiddos and CHEAP!!  If you’d like to make a bigger one then check out Totally Tots or Teach Preschool for inspiration.

Fine Motor

My Montessori Journey has wonderful winter based activities that will help your child work on their fine motor skills and practical life skills.

Pretend Play

Sensory bins are a great way to keep kiddos entertain for long periods of time.  Here are a couple of examples I found around the world wide web.  Just follow the links below to get a closer look at what’s inside.

Winter Fun Center Ideas

Brr.  It has been cold here in our neck of the woods and we actually got some snow for the first time this season!  So, I am so excited to start doing some fun winter themed activities.

To get you started, I’ve found some fabulous resources that can be use in independent centers.  Remember to go over how to do the activity with your kiddo before allowing them to do it independently.

Writing
Love the free resources from Busy Bee Kids Printables! Their mazes have varying levels of difficulty.  Plus, they have several choices on dot-to-dots. My son will be using our Crayola Dry Erase Activity Center with these printables, which will allow these pages to be used over and over again without having to laminate them. If you don’t have a Crayola Dry Erase Activity Center, then I would suggest laminating them.

Winter Dot-to-Dots
To simplify the dot-to-dots for kiddos that struggle with numbers, just connect the larger numbers for them before hand.

Games
I found a easy to create matching game while browsing Pinterest.  All you’ll need is some assorted scrap paper and a pair of scissors. Just follow the link below to learn more.

Hope your staying nice and toasty!

Summer Fun!

This unit offers a wide range of possibilities for field trips.  Summer in general is all about vacations and water. So, we headed to a near by splash park to get cooled off from the 90 degree weather!

IMG_8595  IMG_8592

The boy was a bit timid about really getting in there.  I’m not sure why.  Last year we were all over the splash parks.  But, one thing he couldn’t get enough of was the “mini” water slides.  If the line hadn’t gotten longer as the day went on, he may have never stopped going down them.

Here are a few other “field trip” ideas:

  • Go to $1 Movies. Our local Cinemark is offering a morning movie a week for $1.  So, make sure to check your local theaters to find out if they have any special summer programs.
  • Visit a city pool.
  • Head out to the nearest body of water. Trips to the lake, river and even the ocean are a summer must.  (Highly jealous of all you that will have access to a beach this summer.  My CA roots longs to hear the crashing of the waves again.)
  • If you’re looking to save money by staying at home, then running through sprinklers was always one of my favorites.  Don’t forget the old timer,  slippin’ slide.  Last, but surely not least, water balloons are bound to make a splash with your kiddos.

We want to hear what you do in the summer to stay cool!  We know you all are full of fabulous ideas, so leave a comment and share your awesomeness with all of us.

Summertime Books

This week we are learning all about summer!  Do you have any summer adventures planned?  I created a "What Can I Do? Can" with a big help from the Happy Home Fairy. If you haven’t checked it out, make sure you do.  Everything is already prepared for you.  All you have to do is supply the can!

Speaking of summer, we wanted to give you a heads up about our summer posting schedule. In order to take advantage of the summertime fun, we will be cutting back on our post to about 3 times a week starting next week.  We have some fun units planned, so make sure and stick around.

Now on to some book suggestions.

What are your favorite Summer books? Please leave a comment below. The more choices the better! Thanks.

Spring Rain

I’m not sure what your spring weather has been, but we have been experiencing quite a bit of nasty weather in our parts of the woods.  So, this week’s lesson have been very appropriate.

Here is what we’ve been doing this week. Let us know what you think.  We hope by providing these materials to you free of charge, it will make your life easier!

Lesson Plan: The lesson plan includes all the lessons for the week, as well as optional ideas. Items following the lesson plan are just the printables or links to websites we used to teach these plans.  (Please note: On top of our lesson plan we are reading books daily that relate to our theme.)

{Coming Soon.  Family in town.}

Memory Verse: This memory card is for daily use during our calendar time.  You can learn more about calendar time at 1+1+1=1 or Homeschool Creations.  Our weekly devotional is an object lesson that will help your child apply the meaning of the verse to them.

Day 1: Raindrops
Beginning Rain Writing- (Can also be used for cutting practice.)You can use this document over and over again if you laminate it and then have you child write with dry erase markers. (Black dry erase wipes off easier than color ones.)

Count the Raindrops- This activity will help your child begin to read, count and model whole numbers 1-10.

Cotton Ball Clouds- This is a fun science activity that we found at Naturally Educational. It has your kiddo exploring what happens to a cloud when it becomes full of moisture.  We created this experiment sheet to go with it.

Day 2: Storms
Storm Letter Match- Have your child match the capital letter to the lowercase letter to reinforce letter recognition.

Storm Size Sequencing- Work on recognizing different sizes and vocabulary such as bigger and smaller with this sequencing activity.  We’ve also included a Size Sort.

Storm Science- Here a few experiments about different storms that you could do with your kiddo.

Day 3: Rainbows
Rainbow Spelling Puzzle- This activity will help your child begin to recognize that when letters are combined they form words.
Rainbow Shape Match- Review shapes by matching each side of the rainbow.

Make a Rainbow- Here a few experiments about making rainbows that you could do with your kiddo.

We hope you enjoy these lesson plans and please let us know if you have any issues with downloading or using the items provided.
