People Who Keep Us Safe

Here is what we’ve been doing this week. Let us know what you think.  We hope by providing these materials to you free of charge, it will make your life easier!

Lesson Plan: The lesson plan includes all the lessons for the week, as well as optional ideas. Items following the lesson plan are just the printables or links to websites we used to teach these plans.  (Please note: On top of our lesson plan we are reading books daily that relate to our theme throughout the week.)Memory Verse: This memory card is for daily use during our calendar time.  You can learn more about calendar time at 1+1+1=1 or Homeschool Creations.  Our weekly devotional is an object lesson that will help your child apply the meaning of the verse to them.
Day 1:
S is for Safety- Teaches your child how letters are linked to sounds to form letter-sound correspondence.

Safety Lapbook- Homeschool Creations has great lapbooks on firefighters and police officers.  We mixed & matched her fabulous printables from those lapbooks to create a Safety Lapbook. Pick the activities that your child would like the best or create both.
Day 2:
Fire Fighting Beginning Writing- Not all tots will be ready for this, so don’t stress if yours has difficulty. You can use this document over and over again if you laminate it and then have you child write with dry erase markers.(Black dry erase wipes off easier than color ones.)
Shape Fire Truck- Your child will use visualization and spatial reasoning to begin to notice characteristics and properties of geometric shapes.
Day 3:
Catch the Robber (Dice Game)- This activity will help your child begin to read and count whole numbers 1-3.
Stranger Danger- For this activity you will need to decide what
is best for your family. Below is a picture book that you can read to your child that introduces the concept of staying safe.  You can also watch it on You Tube- Part 1 & Part 2.
Buy on Amazon.
We hope you enjoy these lesson plans and please let us know if you have any issues with downloading or using the items provided.

Fire Straw Art

This was a fun craft for you to do with your tot. It offers a great new way to paint a picture, but make sure you thin your paint otherwise it will leave you light headed. I’m not speaking from experience or anything. ;)

Materials:

  • Metal or Plastic Cake Pan
  • White or black paper
  • Paint- red, yellow and orange (See Below for edible paint recipe. Please note that edible doesn’t mean delicious.)
  • Drinking Straw (We used bendable.)

Directions:

  1. Trim paper as needed to cover the bottom of the pan.
  2. Place your white or black piece of paper inside of your cake pan.  This helps control the extra paint that blows around.
  3. Place a few drops of red, yellow and orange paint at the bottom of the paper. For best results, set it up like the picture below. (Depending on the thickness of store bought paint I would water it down for easier mobility across the paper.)
  4. Give your child(ren) a straw and have them practice blowing through it.
  5. Then have them place the straw near the paint and blow hard. You may need to work together at first.  IMG_6184
  6. The paint should stream up the page creating "flame like" designs.

Optional- Glue a couple of pieces of brown construction paper to bottom in the form of an X to look like burning wood.

If you’re worried that you child may suck up paint then you can make your own paint that will be safe if ingested.

Materials:

  • cornstarch
  • water
  • food coloring
  • measuring cup
  • small dish

 Directions:

  1. Combine equal parts of cornstarch and water.  You won’t need much, unless you plan to paint a lot of pictures.
  2. Add a few drops of food coloring and stir until blended to the color of choice.
  3. Repeat to make as many different colors as you’d like.

Most importantly remember to enjoy this time creating with your tot.

He Keeps me Safe

Our unit this week is all about people who keep us safe.  Our verse for this week is from Psalms 16:1

image

Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge

Materials:

  • A telephone, or a play phone

Directions:

  • Say the verse above with your child.  We suggest that you print the verse off and use it every morning with your calendar time.

  • If you don’t do calendar time still say the verse each morning with your tot before you begin tot school

  • Using the telephone ask your tot to make some pretend phone calls to you.  Play along and talk back to your tot.

Talk about the Following with your child

Its fun to call mommy or daddy on the phone, isn’t it.  Sometimes though you call on mommy and daddy when your scared, don’t you?  It can be dark outside, or maybe there is a storm and we hear lots of thunder and see lightning and worry that we won’t be safe.  I know that when you’re scared you normally call for mommy, or for daddy, and that’s a good thing, because we will always come to you when you call for us.  You don’t need a telephone to call for mommy and daddy though, do you?  Did you know that God hears us when we call for Him?  We don’t need a phone for him either!  Just like mommy and daddy, when you call for God, He will come to you.  God won’t come in your room, or hug you when your scared, but He does come into your heart.  When you call for God to keep you safe from the things that scare you He takes away the fear that you have and will make things better.  When you are scared call out to God to keep you safe, and He will always come to make you feel better.   Our verse talks about God being our refuge, and that is a big word for a safe place.  Let’s thank God for keeping us safe, and for being there when we call for Him.

Dear Father, thank you for coming to us when we call out for you.  We know that you love us, and that you will always make us feel better when we are scared.  Be with us today as we play and learn.  We pray this in your name, Amen.

Questions to ask:

  • Who can you call on when your scared? God

  • Will God always hear you and keep you safe? Yes

Movie Night-Bolt

This week we are learning all about the people in our community who keep us safe.  For movie night we watched “Bolt” from our instant queue on Net Flix and had “2 Alarm Chili”, because I just don’t like it that hot!

My chili recipe comes from my mom.  Its incredibly easy and we have pretty frequently in this house.  Here is the recipe if you want to give it a try.

1 15 oz. Can of Hot Chili Beans
1 15 oz. Can of Mild Chili Beans (We really like Bush’s or Brooks chili beans)
2 packages of Chili Seasoning Mix (Any brand, and if you like really spicy chili, grab one hot and one regular)
1 bottle of V8 “Spicy” Veggie Juice
1 lb. of Ground Beef or Ground Turkey, browned and then drained

Directions:
Brown ground beef or turkey in a dutch oven and then drain.  Add in beans, chili seasoning, and V8.  Turn heat to medium and heat until hot throughout.  How easy is that!!!!???

If you’d like, set out some shredded cheddar cheese and sour cream to add as toppings!

After dinner we watched “Bolt”.  If you haven’t seen the movie, its pretty cute.  The end of the movie is where our theme kind of ties in, but I won’t write a spoiler here.  E loves when we let her watch a WHOLE movie, so she was mesmerized!

If you do this theme night, start early.  Dinner and whole movie is a long night, but with the weather turning cooler, and the sun setting sooner, that might be just what you guys need to keep those kiddos entertained!   On another note, I know that both of us rave about Net Flix.  We are cable free households, so Net Flix is our entertainment!!  We don’t get a commission, and we don’t have stock in Net Flix, we’re just trying to help!

Hope you guys have a great family movie night!
