Pumpkin Kindergarten Extension Pack

So, I’ve schedule some fun themed filled review days for the boy this school year.  He did this K Pumpkin Pack last Thursday, while he was staying with Grandma.  Lil’Bro had a heart study, so it worked out great.  He was able to do it by himself, therefore allowing the day to be “counted.”   If you’re looking for a fun theme day next week for your kindergarten, make sure and grab this new Pumpkin K Extension Pack.  If you need some pumpkin fun for your tot or preschooler, swing by this post.

Here’s what you’ll find inside: Pumpkin Math, Tracing Strips: Pumpkin Varieties, Skip Counting Puzzles, Pumpkin Parts, Pumpkin 100 Chart Art, Pumpkin Observations and Pumpkin Spin & Graph.  Add a few pumpkin books and your day is set.

In the Kitchen-Pumpkins!

As we were prepping ideas for this week doing something in the kitchen came to mind.  Pumpkins are great for carving and decorating, but they are also great for cooking.

Now, I am not going to go out there and buy a pumpkin and make something from scratch!  So I went out and bought this:

P1080120

I had the kit, and a very willing helper:

P1080123

But I neglected to get:

Something is wrong in my head guys.  Who forgets MAIN ingredients for a recipe?   What is worse is I didn’t even realize I was missing ingredients until we were ready and prepping in the kitchen!  E was in her apron and READY TO GO!  Gees…..

Now, you too can go out and get your Libby’s Pumpkin Bread Kit and let your kiddo help you out in the kitchen, or you can try one of these other fun Pumpkin themed recipes!

image You can try this Pumpkin Cookie recipe from All Recipes.  Let the kiddos pour in the ingredients and stir some!  The reviews say they turn out more like cakes, but they still look yummy!
Ok, so Libby’s also has these EASY pumpkin cupcakes on their site.  They have cream cheese frosting….YUM!  If you kiddo isn’t old enough to help bake, you make these in advance and let decorate with Fall sprinkles!  image

Whatever you do, I think letting your kiddo be involved in the kitchen is the big thing.  That is the main goal, and I hope these ideas help you get there!

Pumpkin Centers

This week we are expanding our Pumpkin Theme printables.

To get you started, I’ve found some fabulous resources that can be use in independent centers.

Fine Motor

My Montessori Journey has wonderful pumpkin based activities that will help your child work on their fine motor skills.

You usually can find various decorative pumpkins at your nearest craft store and even dollar store.  However, you could also use candy corn pumpkins!  If all else fails, orange pom-poms would work perfectly as well.

Art

Making Learning Fun has a pumpkin Easel Art Page.

Easy Easel Art: Pumpkin

Play-Dough

Make some pumpkin scented play-dough or just use an orange one with our Pp for Pumpkin play-dough mat.  To keep your kiddos engaged longer, provide a few pumpkin cookie cutters and brown pipe cleaners for stems they can stick in rolled up balls.

Hopefully these ideas will keep your kiddos entertained for awhile.

Pumpkins

This unit has been expanded. So, make sure and check out the additional printables here.

Here is what we’ve been doing this week. Let us know what you think.  We hope by providing these materials to you free of charge, it will make your life easier!

Lesson Plan: The lesson plan includes all the lessons for the week, as well as optional ideas. Items following the lesson plan are just the printables or links to websites we used to teach these plans.  (Please note: On top of our lesson plan we are reading books daily that relate to our theme.)
Memory Verse: This memory card is for daily use during our calendar time.  You can learn more about calendar time at 1+1+1=1 or Homeschool Creations.  Our weekly devotional is an object lesson that will help your child apply the meaning of the verse to them.
(Not sure why all of the image is not showing up on 4Share. Sorry.)

Day 1:
P is for Pumpkins- Teaches your child how letters are linked to sounds to form letter-sound correspondence. (For this activity you can do a lowercase p or a capital P.)
IMG_6371
Number Maze: Pumpkin Patch-  This activity will help your child practice counting whole numbers 1-10 in order by 1s.

Day 2:
Color By Letter Pumpkin- Reinforces capital letter and lowercase letter recognition.

Flip & Cover: Pumpkin Patch- This activity will help your child begin to read, count and model whole numbers 1-10.  (Pick the counting cards that would be best for your child.) You can use a variety of objects to cover your pumpkins, such as: orange pom poms, bingo chips, pumpkin stickers, dot paint, magnets, etc. Affilation links.

Life Cycle of a Pumpkin- To do this activity we read a book and as we read, I allow my son to use picture clues from the story to identify the next stage in the pumpkin life cycle.  Then I had him find the printed image and glue it on to the paper plate. A couple of good books include: It’s Pumpkin Time! and From Seed to Pumpkin.Affilation links. We found several life cycle cards that you could use: Kizclub- Sequencing Cards and Montessori for Everyone-Life Cycle of a Pumpkin.

Note: The Life Cycle images above were not created by us, I just colored them in Photoshop Elements.  You can download the original blackline master from A to Z Teacher Stuff.

Day 3:
Build a Letter P- Teaches your child how letters are constructed by building them in a fun way. (Download the whole alphabet below and laminate. Print on cardstock for more durability.)

Measure the Pumpkin Vines- This activity will help your child gain experience in measurement by using a non-standard measuring tool.

Fall Lapbook- We went ahead a created a fall lapbook to use with this unit.  It touches on a variety of skills, such as shapes, colors, size sequencing, etc..

We hope you enjoy these lesson plans and please let us know if you have any issues with downloading or using the items provided.

Pumpkin Pickin’

This week’s field trip is a given.  Most of you either have already done it or are planning on it.  If you haven’t figured it out from the title, we headed to a pumpkin patch to pick our very own pumpkin.  (We will be bisecting it to learn all about its structures.)

This week we actually have had the privilege of going to two pumpkin patches.  Yes, we did! To top it off, we are planning to go a 3rd time with Daddy.  Lil’man had so much fun visiting both.

Pumpkin Patches sure have changed since I was a kid.  Each place we visited was full of “extras.” The only patch that I brought my camera to had tractors to ride and hay stacks to climb.

IMG_6270IMG_6273

There was a silo full of corn sensory tables.  This was one of the boy’s favorite.  They shoveled it, poured it, transported it and dumped it.  They also enjoyed shooting down the tube slide.

IMG_6264IMG_6258

Once we finished playing, about a good hour later, we took a wagon ride out to the pumpkin patch.  Unfortunately, the pumpkin patch wasn’t as fun as the “extras.”  Little feet get easily tangled in the vines, which leads to frustrations and tumbles and eventually cries of “up please.”

We ended the day with a photo op.  Aren’t these two kiddos just adorable?

So, even if you aren’t going to purchase pumpkins, make sure you visit a patch just for capturing some great fall pictures.

The True Vine

This week we are learning all about pumpkins.  Our memory verse for the week is John 15:1.

image

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.”

Materials:

  • A pumpkin

Directions:

  • Say the verse above with your child.  We suggest that you print the verse off and use it every morning with your calendar time.

  • If you don’t do calendar time still say the verse each morning with your tot before you begin tot school

  • Using a pumpkin, talk about the devotional with your child.

  • This devotional will go hand and hand with our suggested field trip for this week.  We suggest you do the devotional after you’ve visited a pumpkin patch.

  • If you aren’t able to visit a pumpkin patch, talk about the devotional using the life cycle cards you can find here.

Talk about the following with your tot:

We picked this pumpkin special, didn’t we?  We went out to the pumpkin patch and got him to take home with us, huh?  Do you remember what this pumpkin was on? Do you remember the really long things that were all over the ground?  Some of them were so long and twisty that you feet got all tangled in them, remember?  Those things are called vines.  Our pumpkin grew on one.  Vines bring good things to the pumpkins so that they can grow.  Do you remember how we took our pumpkin and picked him from the vine?  We did that so he could come home with us, but because he isn’t on his vine anymore, he won’t get any bigger.  Jesus tells us in our verse today that He is like a vine for us.  He tells us that we have to stay close to Him to keep growing and learning new things.  Reading our Bible Verse everyday, saying our prayers, and learning about Jesus through our Bible stories are all ways of staying close to Jesus.   Lets ask God in our prayer today if He will help us stay close to Him and Jesus.

Dear Father, We thank you so much for loving us and taking care of us.  Thank you for giving us the Bible, so that we can grow closer to you and learn more about you.  We ask that you would help us want to know more about you each day, so we can always stay close to you.  Amen
