    Brushing and Flossing Helps

Did you know that February is Dental Health month?  Neither did I.  Maybe Madonna did which is why we are doing this unit right now!  Anywhoo, here are a few ideas that might help you as you teach your kiddo about dental health this week!  Since we are going to give flossing a go I am paying particular attention to those activities!

    image

This idea from Mama Bee and the Hive is for a Roll and Cover Mouth! Ironically we will likely use marshmallows for teeth, but you could use gum, or cotton balls! We will likely glue our teeth on and “floss” around them too! This will also keep us from eating them!

    image

Shining our Lights has a wonderful and easy idea for you mommies short on time!  Use a chalk board and a toothbrush to help you kiddo learn proper brushing techniques!  Draw the teeth and then let you kiddo erase them by brushing.

Here is one more great idea from Mama Bee and the Hive. Let your kiddo practice flossing with a mega block and some playdough! Truly I tell you, its brilliant!  Mama Bee has many wonderful ideas on this page, so check it out!

Lastly, because I literally just found it, is this awesome Science experiment from 1st Grade with Miss Snowden.  I know that E wouldn’t fully get it, but it was just too awesome not to feature!!

    Have fun learning!!

    People Who Keep Us Healthy

Here is what we’ve been doing this week. Sorry the post is a little late (again!)  but we had some computer issues!  Let us know what you think.  We hope by providing these materials to you free of charge, it will make your life easier!

Lesson Plan: The lesson plan includes all the lessons for the week, as well as optional ideas. Items following the lesson plan are just the printables or links to websites we used to teach these plans.  (Please note: On top of our lesson plan we are reading books daily that relate to our theme.)

Memory Verse: This memory card is for daily use during our calendar time.  You can learn more about calendar time at 1+1+1=1 or Homeschool Creations.  Our weekly devotional is an object lesson that will help your child apply the meaning of the verse to them.

    Day 1:
Beginning Writing-Nurse to Patient- For those tots that may struggle with following the lines, we have added a simpler writing activity.  The 2nd activity has no lines (just a gray path), so all your child has to do is connect the Santa to the sleigh, any way they can.  You can use this document over and over again if you laminate it and then have you child write with dry erase markers. (Black dry erase wipes off easier than color ones.)

Measure the Patient activity- In this activity your child will use a number ruler to measure patients.  This activity will also work on counting skills.

Doctor/Nurse Pretend Play-Help your child learn about these important roles through pretend play.   If you don’t have a costume for a doctor or nurse you can make one with these things:

    • A white men’s dress shirt
    • travel first aid kit ($.99 at most drug stores)
    • a tie
    • a note pad and pen
    • empty medicine bottles

The shirt is a lab coat, the tie makes you a professional!  You can put the first aid items, the notepad, and the medicine bottles in a an old purse or carry-on and your kiddo has an instant doctors bag!

    Day 2:
Beginning Spelling: Doctor Spelling Puzzle-This activity will help your child work on letter sounds and beginning spelling concepts.

Emergency Game- This activity will help your child with counting skills.

Germ Experiment/Hand Washing- This activity will help your child begin to understand the concept of germs and hygiene as well as reinforcing the importance of hand washing.

    Day 3:
Toothbrush Letter Recognition Game- Reinforces letter recognition, or beginning sounds depending upon play.  Draw the letters of the alphabet on piece on some construction paper and let your child trace over each letter with a toothbrush.  This will also work on fine-motor skills and beginning writing.

Toothbrush Shape Match Game- This activity will reinforce or help teach your child shapes.

Label Parts of Mouth/Tooth brushing Activity- This activity will teach your child to label and identify the parts of the mouth.  It will also help your child develop personal hygiene routines and habits.    You can use this mouth diagram, from homeschoolshare.com and these labels to go over the parts of the mouth.

    Extras:

This week we also played at “Cover the Boo-Boo Game” for our family night.

We also worked on what “Makes our teeth Happy, Makes our teeth Sad?” craft.

We hope you enjoy these lesson plans and please let us know if you have any issues with downloading or using the items provided.

    Happy and Sad Teeth Collage

We had a lot of fun creating these tooth collages. I found the idea on Kid Soup's Free Dental Activity Page.  My son did struggle with the whole concept of the sweets making the tooth sad because sweets sure make him HAPPY!
    IMG_7779
    Materials:
    Directions:
    • Print off 2 tooth patterns
    • Using the marker to label each tooth with Happy or Sad title.  Also, draw a happy or sad face on each.
    IMG_7768
    • Cut out food images.  If your child is capable allow them to cut them out.
    • We focused on one tooth at a time so I could go over the food items with him and explain why those foods made the tooth happy or sad.
    • Have your child glue correct images on each tooth.

Most importantly remember to enjoy this time creating with your tot.

    Healer of our Hurts

The verse you will be working with your child on this week is Psalm 30:2.

    image

“Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.”

    Materials:

    • Memory Verse Card
    • A First Aid Kit

    Directions:

    • Let your child go through the first aid kit and talk about some of the things they see, and what they are used for.
    • Go over the devotion with your child
    • Say the verse above with your tot.  We suggest that you print the verse off and use it every morning with your calendar time.  If you don’t do calendar time still say the verse each morning with your tot before you begin tot school.

Talk with your child about the following:
There are a lot of things in this first aid kit, huh.  We have band aids, and we know they are used to cover our boo boos, aren’t they.  There is some medicine in here for mommy or daddy when they don’t feel good, and there is some medicine for you too!  This week we have been learning about people who keep us healthy, and we’ve talked some about how nurses, doctors, and dentists help us take care of our bodies. We don’t have a doctor that is always here to help us, but there are a lot of things in this first aid kit that would make us feel better if we weren’t feeling too good, huh?  Sometimes though, when we don’t feel good, its not because our bodies are hurting, its because our feelings are hurting. Have you ever felt sad?  How about angry, or scared?  Sometimes when we don’t feel good, band aids and medicine wouldn’t make us feel any better, would they?  Our Bible verse today tells us that God is with us no matter what happens to help us feel better.  He may not be right here with us where we can see Him, but He did leave us His word in the Bible to help us feel better.   Just like the first aid kit can help us when we can’t see the doctor, the Bible can help us when we need to see God.  The Bible is kind of like a first aid kit for our hearts.  It isn’t full of band aids, but it is full of verses and words that God himself gave to us.  It helps us to remember that God is with us, even if we can’t see Him with our eyes, and that no matter what happens He will be there to help us and make us feel better.  Let’s pray to God and thank Him that He gave us the Bible, and that He  loves us and wants to help us.

God, you have given us so much, and we thank you.  You know that sometimes our bodies don’t feel as good as they should, and we ask that you would strengthen and heal us if we are hurting.  You know too, Lord, that our hearts can sometimes hurt.  We thank you that you gave us your word to help us to feel better.  Help us remember that you are with us, and that you will always be there to heal our hurts when we ask.  In your name we pray,  Amen.

Theme Night-People Who Keep us Healthy!

Ok, I ain’t gonna lie.  This is a HARD thing to do a theme night on.  That, dear mommies, is why we are here.  We aim to please!  Our theme night had two stations, one for the doctor and the other for the dentist.

Our Living room was the “doctor’s office” and we played this Doctor Game.  Here is what you need:

    • Mommy, Daddy, and the kiddos each take a “patient”.
    • In the middle of the table, put a pile of band-aids.
    • Each person rolls the color dice.  You have to match the color on the dice to one of your patients “boo-boos”.  If you have a “boo boo” that matches the color rolled, you take a band-aid and cover one of your patients “boo-boos”.  If you don’t have that color anymore than the next person takes their turn.
    • The first person to cover all of their patients “boo-boos” wins!

I will tell you that E loved playing with band-aids.  Like most kids, she is a sucker for band-aids, so this was a fun game!

Our kitchen was our “dentist’s office” and we made a dentist snack.  I don’t think that a dentist would really recommend this snack, but it turned out cute.  You’ll need:

    P1070275

    • an apple
    • some mini marshmallows
    • some peanut butter

Directions: Cut the apple into slices.  Spread some peanut butter on two slices of the apple.  Put the mini marshmallows between the two slices and make a “mouth”.  You then get to eat this weird little combo, which E enjoyed!

    P1070278 P1070297

Here are a couple more ideas you might want to try!

    • Cut a large tooth shape out of a yellow piece of construction paper.  Using an old toothbrush and some white paint, let your child “brush” on the white paint to make it clean.  (no pics available, but the idea comes from childfun.com)
    • Give your child a couple of chocolate cookies (like Oreo’s) and then let them look at their teeth.  Talk about how some foods stick to your teeth more than others, especially sweet and sticky foods, which is why we need to make sure and brush our teeth each night.  (This idea was also on childfun.com)

If you have any ideas that you would be willing to share with the rest of us, please do in the comments!  We would love to know what you all do on your family nights!

Must Reads- People Who Keep Us Healthy

This week we are learning all about the people who keep us healthy. We will be focusing each day on one of the following community helpers: doctor, nurse, and dentist.

Unfortunately, we are still waiting on the books we reserved at the library for this unit, so I can’t give you our favorites at this time.  Instead I thought I would share a few suggestions for each community helper.  If you have any other suggestions for our fellow readers please do so in the comments below.

I hope you’re able to find some of these at your local library!
