Graphing Through the Super Bowl

I’m sure many of you are aware of the BIG game that is happening this weekend…well at least all you American football fans out there.  My husband is stoked!  His beloved Broncos have a chance to take it all home.  football familyWe will all be decked out in our Orange & Blue rooting for, as my husband would say, “the greatest football team in the history of mankind.” (No disrespect to any Seahawks fans.)

To bring a little education and fun to Sunday’s festivities, I’ve created a new Ask & Graph!!  (The very first is apart of the Groundhog Mini unit.)

Football Ask and Graph

I’m pretty sure our graph will be pretty tilted.

Football Colors and Counting

E is really loving three things right now: coloring, counting, and mazes.  The latter I blame on Jolanthe over at Homeschool Creations because her packs have really cute (and more challenging) mazes than ours.  The first two though, that is something that I can take care of!

I saw some worksheets somewhere (they were in a book, but I don’t remember where) that I really liked.  Of course on sight I thought “You know, I could totally make those!”  I chatted with Madonna about the thought and we decided to table it for later.  Later has come!  This football counting book goes all the way to 20.  You can count, color, and trace your way to learning!

And, because the Turkey Color Books went over really well, I made one for football jerseys!

I think I might take these with us next week to Mimi’s for Thanksgiving.  I know E is turkey’d and pilgrim’d out, and I think this theme might entertain her until the turkey’s tryptophan kicks in and I enjoy her nap time!

Football Centers

This week we are expanding our “Football” Theme printables.

To get you started, I’ve found some fabulous resources that can be used in independent centers and I even created more magnet pages for you.

Games

Making Learning Fun has a cute NFL Memory Game.  This can easily be used with younger kiddos by making it a matching game.  Your football fans will love it!  Remember to print it on cardstock and laminate it for more durability.

Pretend Play

I found this fun sport set on Amazon that scored rave reviews.  Not only would this keep your football fan entertained, but Daddy too! This set comes with 2 Teams, 26 players, 1 referee, 2 goalposts and a washable felt field measures 24" X 36".

Magnet Pages

Since we haven’t done magnet pages in awhile, I decided to go ahead and make some more for you.

Helmet Magnet Page   Jersey Magnet Page
Click to Download 6 magnet pages.

You can use several different things with your magnet pages. Do-a-Dot Paints work great, but then you’ll only get one use out of them.  I recommend laminating the pages and using Bingo Chips, Power Magnets or homemade pom-pom magnets with them.

Hope you’re a “fan” of these ideas.

Lesson Plan: The lesson plan includes all the lessons for the week, as well as optional ideas. Items following the lesson plan are just the printables or links to websites we used to teach these plans.  (Please note: On top of our lesson plan we are reading books daily that relate to our theme.)

Memory Verse: This memory card is for daily use during our calendar time.  You can learn more about calendar time at 1+1+1=1 or Homeschool Creations.  Our weekly devotional is an object lesson that will help your child apply the meaning of the verse to them.

Day 1:
F is for Football- Teaches your child how letters are linked to sounds to form letter-sound correspondence.

Football Clip Cards-  This activity will help your child practice counting whole numbers 1-10 and recognizing those numbers by sight.

Football Lacing Card-  Use this football lacing card from DLTK to  help your child with fine motor skills.

Day 2:

Running the Race

This week our memory verse comes from 1 Corinthians 9:24.

“All the runners run, but only one gets the prize.  Run in such a way to get the prize.”

Materials:

  • A race course (just a simple start and finish line)

  • Your tot and someone to race with (meaning get siblings involved or put on your tennis shoes!)

Directions:

  • Set up your mini race course
  • Have your child(ren) run the race.
  • Ask your child if they wanted to win the race.  (If your racing your kiddo, you might want to let them win!)
  • Go over the devotional with your child.
  • Say the verse above with your child.  We suggest that you print the verse off and use it every morning with your calendar time.  If you don’t do calendar time still say the verse each morning with your tot before you begin tot school.

Talk about the following with your tot:

Its fun to race one another isn’t it?  You know when we run races, we really want to win them, don’t we.  No one really runs in a race hoping to lose, do they?  This week we’ve been talking about football.  Football, like racing, is a something we do hoping to win.  Both teams play each other and they both hope to win.   In our memory verse it tells us that we are to run the race to win.  Now the race that this verse is talking about isn’t the type of race we just ran.  The race in this verse is about trusting God, even when its hard.  It would be hard to run a race if you didn’t know where the finish line was, wouldn’t it?   This verse tells that even though we don’t always know what God wants us to do, we should do it the best we can, just like a runner in a race.  Lets pray and ask God to keep us strong in our faith, to do the things He wants us to all the time.

Dear Father, Thank you so much for all the things that you’ve given us.  We ask you to help us do all the things that you want us to, even if we don’t always know what things to do.  Help us do everything the best that we can, just like runners running to win a race.  We love you.  Amen

Activity/Game:

  • Football Game- ‘Tis the season for football games.  I know it’s a little late to go to a high school game, but watching football on TV can be fun too.  Make sure to support your favorite team by dressing in team colors or logo wear.
  • Touch Football- Get outside and throw the football around or just chase your tots around as they hold a football.

  • Paper Football- My husband came up with this idea. If you’ve never heard of this activity before ask some of the men in your life about it or you can read about it here.   Evidently, it was a favorite of my husband when he was in school.

Craft:

  • Football Player- This craft can be modified to work with younger kids, but would be fun for the older ones as well. fbplayerth
  • Paint and Stuff Football from No Time For Flash Cards- This is another simple football craft perfect for the tot in your life.

Must Reads- Football Theme

This week we thought we would have a little fun with some football.  Below are a couple of the popular choices in our house, well they’re the only football books in our house.  You see our library had a limited selection, so you get what you get.  If you would like a couple of other ideas then check out our Amazon Store.

Buy on Amazon.T is for TouchdownAffilation Link. is a fun way to teach the alphabet, which my son loves.  He is a big fan of letters and football. Each page has a short rhyming sentence telling about how the game is played or historical facts from the sport. The illustrations are very unique for a children’s books because the pictures actually look like canvas paintings. To top it off though, this book was also a big hit with my husband because each page had 2-3 paragraphs of additional reading about the ideas introduced in the rhyming text.  Overall, it’s a worth while read for football fans big and small.

Buy on Amazon.Gunner, Football HeroAffilation Link.is a story about an awkward little boy who wants nothing more but to play quarterback for the town’s Pee Wee Football League. He gets his wish and makes the team, but finds himself on the bench every game, that is until the championship game.  This book has an original storyline and eye catching water color illustrations. For a children’s book its kind of a page turner and even has a funny twist at the end.

Do you have any favorites?
