Dr. Seuss’ Birthday

Oh man!  Last week was a doozy! A stomach virus hit us hard and took each of us out on different days…our youngest got hit twice!  It seems we may finally be on the mend.

Did you know that yesterday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday? It was also National Read Across America Day.   I was hoping to put a theme pack together for Lil’Man, but it just never happened.  I did however get an 100 Chart Art done.

cat_in_the_hat smallIn celebration of Read Across America, we checked out quite a few Dr. Seuss books from the library, but we are also going to do some fun crazy activities to get us moving!

I wanted to share a few links with you to inspire you to get your kiddos moving.  I will be using a few of these ideas this week with Lil’man. The best part is these activities are connected to different Seuss books.  So, go check out these fabulous ideas:

Oh, The Plans I Have For You!

The verse you will be working with your child on this week is Jeremiah 29:11.

image

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you.”

Materials:

  • The Book Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss

Directions:

  • Read the book with your tot at some point before the devotional.  Depending upon your kiddos attention span you may not want to read the story and then go right into the devotional.  You can use the book as a cue if you read it and do the devotional later.
  • Say the verse above with your tot.  We suggest that you print the verse off and use it every morning with your calendar time.  If you don’t do calendar time still say the verse each morning with your tot before you begin tot school.
  • Follow the cues given in this devotional.

Talk with your child about the following:
This week we’ve been reading a lot of Dr. Seuss books.  The book we read today was called Oh, the Places You’ll Go.  In the book the little boy went a lot of places, didn’t he?  Do you remember some of the places he went?  He went down the street, and out into the country, didn’t he?  There were a couple of times that he didn’t know where to go, and there were a couple of times that he also got a little scared, huh?

Its easy to scared or upset when something happens that we don’t think will happen.  Like when we lose a favorite toy, or we don’t get the things that we would like to get.  You might get scared when you don’t know what is going to happen, huh?  But you know what?  There is someone who knows EXACTLY what is going to happen to us.  Do you know who that is?

God knows just what is going to happen to each of us.  Our Bible verse tells us that God knows the plans he has for us, and He tells us that those plans are there to cause good things to happen to us.  Just like the little boy in the book, we don’t always know what is going to happen, but we do have something the little boy in the book didn’t have.  We have the Bible, and it is full of the promises God gave to us, and we know that God has plans for us.  Those are very good things to have for the places we will go.

Let’s pray.

Lord, thank you for having plans for us and our lives.  We know that there are things that will happen that we don’t expect.  In those times help us to know that you have plans for us, and that the things that are happening are all in your hands.  Help us to look in the Bible when we have questions about where we should go, and what we should do.  Help us also to have joy in knowing that you want only good things for us, and that all things will work for the good of us when we love you.  In your name we pray, Amen.

Dr. Seuss Unit

This week we kind of had a crazy idea.  We were going to be posting about the senses.  When we talked earlier in the week we randomly came up with a new idea.

Next week is Read Across America.  To celebrate we are planning lessons based off of several of Dr. Seuss’ books.  We want you all to be able to gather the books and materials to celebrate Read Across America with us, so we are posting this lesson plan today.  Remember that we haven’t had a chance to teach this yet and there may be something we missed in the printables.  If you see anything we missed let us know! With that being said, here is what we will be doing to celebrate Dr. Seuss!

Click the image above to download a single zipped file.

Language Arts
“Hop on Pop” Rhyming Flip Books- This flip book activity will introduce your child to rhyming sounds.  The rhymes in this book are based off of Hop on Pop.

Hop on Pop
“Green Eggs And Ham” Beginning Writing- (Can also be used for cutting practice.) You can use this document over and over again if you laminate it and then have you child write with dry erase markers. (Black dry erase wipes off easier than color ones.)
Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books)
“Horton Hears…” A Letter: This activity will help you child identify letters based off of the sound they make.   Print out the printable, which we found at Seussville, and have your child decorate Horton’s ears.  Attach them and then lay out these alphabet cards is front of your child.  Say a letter sound and let your child pick the right letter.  This activity is based off of Horton Hears a Who.

Math
Roll & Graph: “Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?”- Have your child roll the sound die and then add a sticker to the graph above the object that makes that sound.  Once you’ve completed the graph (first object to 10), make sure to ask simple questions.  Such as, “Which item had the most (tallest bar)? Which item had the least (shortest)? How many (cows) did we have?”  Make sure to show them how to use the graph, instead of just counting the stickers..
