Apple Science

The boy and I did another observation activity.  This time we observed APPLES.

Apple Observation Chart
 Click to Download.

Unfortunately, we ran out of printer ink and I was unable to print it!  I was bummed.  So, we had to improvise.  I let him touch my computer screen to point out his answer.

Materials:

  • an apple
  • observation sheet
  • crayons or markers

Directions:

  • Use the worksheet to guide your observations.

IMG_9180  IMG_9174

  • You can decide ahead of time if you want them to listen to the apple as they take a bite out of it or just listen to it as a whole.  We decided to use the “crunch” factor.

IMG_9170  IMG_9173

  • If your kiddo doesn’t understand the term sweet, sour or salty.  Pull out the salt by all means and have them taste it. Have them drink a little water to clean their palate. Then ask them to taste the apple. Do they taste the same?

IMG_9171  IMG_9175

Special Note: When observing the texture I tried to use clip art that your child could relate to and that would be around everyone’s house.  I used a mirror to represent smooth and a cheese grater to represent rough.  So, if you child doesn’t know the term smooth have him/her touch a mirror and say, “This is smooth.”  Do the same with the cheese grater. Then have him/her compare what they are observing to both objects.  You can then ask your child, “Is your ______ smooth like the mirror or rough/bumpy like the cheese grater?”

If you have more than one apple variety you can have a taste test and graph the results.

And that was it.  As I mentioned before the boy loves observation sheets, but he likes them even better when he actually gets to eat something when he does it!

Please do not sell or host these files anywhere else. You MAY link people here. When leading others to these printables, please link to THIS page, not to the file page.  Thanks! (See TOU)

Kids in the Kitchen-Apples!

This week E and I got into the kitchen to make some tasty apple snacks!  E loves to help me in the kitchen, so I love when we can make snacks that I don’t involve cooking, and neither of these do!

First we made Squirmy Wormy Apples!

P1080104

You will need:

  • An Apple
  • Peanut Butter
  • Gummy Worms (veto your kids and skip the neon sour worms!)

Directions: Pierce an apple with a straw or a skewer (we used a blunt chopstick).  Cut the apple in half and dig out the seeds and core.
P1080107 P1080108

Fill in the center of the apple with the peanut butter.  Add a gummy worm and put the two halves back together.  How simple is that?!
P1080110 P1080115

We made this snack, too. It is a variation on these Apple Cartwheels that I found.  P1080119
I would have loved to try this version, but I didn’t have all of the ingredients, so I used what I had, which was….

  • An Apple
  • Peanut Butter
  • Walnuts
  • A Hershey Kiss (yes, one lonely Hershey Kiss from the depths of my pantry)

Directions: Core the apple and cut it into discs.  Spoon peanut butter into the core opening.  P1080118 Using a cheese grater, grate the Hershey kiss over the apple.  Sprinkle with some walnut pieces.

This was seriously good. I have no doubt that I will make this again, and it was SUPER easy.  E and I both enjoyed our snacks, so let us know if you make them too!

Apple Centers

This week we are expanding our Apple theme printables.

To get you started, I’ve found some fabulous resources that can be use in independent centers or even as additional supplements to our printables.

Art

If you’ve never visited Making Learning Fun then you are truly missing out on a rich source of free printables.  You will find tons of stuff on there, so go check it out!  One thing that I came across this summer was the Easel Art Pages. I love how they give visual step by step instructions on how to paint different things!  And wouldn’t you know…there is an apple one!! Just perfect for our unit!

Writing

I found a few activities from Busy Bee Kids Printables that I plan to incorporate into a writing center.   Basically, my son will be using our Crayola Dry Erase Activity Center with these printables, which will allow these pages to be used over and over again without having to laminate them.

If you don’t have a Crayola Dry Erase Activity Center, then I would suggest laminating them.

Fine Motor

My Montessori Journey has wonderful apple based activities that will help your child work on their fine motor skills.

Hope these ideas are helpful.

Apples

This unit has been expanded. So, make sure and check out the additional printables here.

Here is what we’ve been doing this week. Let us know what you think.  We hope by providing these materials to you free of charge, it will make your life easier!

Lesson Plan: The lesson plan includes all the lessons for the week, as well as optional ideas. Items following the lesson plan are just the printables or links to websites we used to teach these plans.  (Please note: On top of our lesson plan we are reading books daily that relate to our theme.)
Memory Verse: This memory card is for daily use during our calendar time.  You can learn more about calendar time at 1+1+1=1 or Homeschool Creations.  Our weekly devotional is an object lesson that will help your child apply the meaning of the verse to them.
Day 1:
A is for Apples- Teaches your child how letters are linked to sounds to form letter-sound correspondence.
Roll & Color: Apple Tree-  This activity will help your child begin to read and count whole numbers 1-10.
Parts of an Apple- Create a felt apple to teach the parts of an apple.
Day 2:
Apple Letter Match- Have your child match the capital letter to the lowercase letter to reinforce letter recognition.

Count & Match: Apples- This activity will help your child begin to read, count and model whole numbers 1-10.
Day 3:
Build a Letter A- Teaches your child how letters are constructed by building them in a fun way.  All you need to do is download this printable created by Tired Need Sleep to create your own.  We downloaded the template and cut our pieces out of foam sheets so we could use them again.  We'd love to include an image, but it won't load for us!

Measure the Apple Trees- This activity will help your child gain experience in measurement by using a non-standard measuring tool.
The Seasons of an Apple Tree- Using the templates provided on Making Learning Fun, teach your child about how an apple tree changes in each season.

We hope you enjoy these lesson plans and please let us know if you have any issues with downloading or using the items provided.

Tots Around Town: Apple Picking

For our apple unit we went apple picking! We took E and Lil’ Man and visited a local apple orchard.

100_1316IMG_5776

We took a wagon ride out to the orchard and asked our driver for some tips on apple picking!

            100_1303 100_1299

The first apples we picked were Golden Delicious Apples.  We were told to look for apples that were more yellow than green.  We told the kiddos this, but they just wanted to keep picking!

100_1311

We decided to go to a couple more sections of the orchard so the tots could keep picking!

We got Jonagold apples, which should be a mix of red and green, and Winesap, which should be deep red when ripe.

100_1304

We kept our apples and later we did a taste test to pick which one we liked the best.  E’s favorite was the Golden Delicious, and I preferred (or became addicted, its all about perspective) to the Jonagold.

100_1318

You can check for apple orchards in your state and area here.  We recommend calling ahead and checking the “picking conditions”.

This is a GREAT field trip for the family.  Let us know if you go apple picking!
