Must Read- Winter Theme

This week we have been learning about things associated with Winter. Below are a couple of our favorites books that we have read, so far:

Snow Day is a fun simple book that uses a text pattern.  The story also uses a lot of simple dialogue. Although, the text is written for a new reader it shares a lot of information, such as what you need to go sledding and things to wear.  We love Patricia Lakin’s and Scott Nash’s alligator books.  Lil’man enjoys looking at the pictures and even repeating some of the dialogue with his own expressions.  This particular book has been his absolute favorite for the past couple of weeks.

Snowy, Blowy Winteris an illustrated poem  that describes things that you might do when there is snow on the ground, both indoors and outdoors. The book is full of big, colorful illustrations that helps complete the writer’s thoughts. Our son pretty much has this book memorized and we often find him “reading” it to himself. And for a special treat you can find a recipe for snow ice cream at the back of the book.

Frozen Nosesis another illustrated poem that talks about bundling up and heading outdoors for winter time activities. The kids build a snowman, have a snowball fight, ice skate, sled, and then they return home to warm up. We loved the felt-like illustrations more than the poem.  The way the poem was broken up across the pages took away from its flow and rhythm.  However, we still considered it a must read for winter since it included so many winter activities and unique art.
